Conferees from Senate and House pressed toward a wage bill agreement amid deadlock. Some expect quick adjournment pressures while others fear no agreement this session and an issue in the upcoming campaign. The House also weighs responding to a Senate vote restoring funds for foreign aid.
The Quality Markets chain circulated a bulletin to employees claiming that unions picketing its stores were making false charges. NLBR findings reportedly showed no evidence of threats, union domination, or bribery as alleged. The bulletin says an NLRB election was to be held to allow secret employee votes, while Quality maintained neutrality in union negotiations.
Violence flared across Jacksonville Florida and Buford Georgia as race clashes led to arrests and property damage. A Jacksonville shooting left one dead after a car with two Negro occupants crashed. a companion, Willie Green, 44, said they did not know the dead man. Fire bombs damaged stores, with losses around 4815 dollars. Jacksonville officials imposed emergency powers, banning gatherings and unnecessary traffic. In Buford rocks were thrown at white youth cars, triggering a clash that drew police to the scene. The outbreaks coincided with civil rights integration battles in New Orleans and Delaware schools scheduled for court orders and imminent decisions.
A New York State Thruway crash near Brocton killed Evelyn Weston 61 of Kent Ohio and injured Jeannette Littlejohn 66 of Ravenna Ohio. Littlejohn, treated for shock and minor bruises at Brooks Memorial Hospital Dunkirk, drifted off the shoulder and struck guard posts causing a fatal sequence. Officials led by Lt H J Ashe and Sgt F C Hoffman investigated the Saturday morning wreck.
R Elvin Fuller delinquent school tax collector announced that 61 Corry firms will issue shorter payrolls this week as overdue school property taxes are collected. Notices to employers warn of final step in past due taxes and the per capita levy totals 2028 60 dollars.
Mary Elizabeth Adams Giles 48, of Giles County Virginia is jailed on murder charges after her son Terry aged 3 died from arsenic poisoning. Three other children Teese Anne 5 John Jy 9 Sandra Sue 10 are hospitalized with arsenic poisoning. Giles, 2 months pregnant, denies the charge as investigators seal the house in Bunker Hill where the family lived.
UN forces plan to take over Belgium's Kamina base in Katanga to prevent Lumumba's troops from using it as an invasion point. Belgian troops withdraw to Rwanda Urundi while maintenance crews remain. Kasai fighting reported as Lumumba challenges persist amid chaos in the Congo.
Erie council awarded the contract for Mead Avenue Raymond Avenue and Wright Street sidewalks to Frank A. Pate Construction Co Erie as second lowest bidder after removing the lowest bid by John Heubel for technical reasons The Pate bid totaled 9989 for sidewalks and 17 feet of curb while other bids ranged from 3181 to 8179 Corry and Erie firms submitted bids and grading was nearly complete ready for Pate to begin work within a day or two The decision was the council's sole business item of the meeting
Vice President Richard M. Nixon is hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Hospital for an antibiotic treatment of a knee infection after a door injury in Greensboro North Carolina on August 17. Doctors ordered him to keep off his feet for about two weeks as a precaution. he plans to continue campaign work and speeches.
Philadelphia AP report notes top PRR officials and Transport Workers Union leaders, led by Michael J. Quill, meeting in a summit aimed at averting a strike. Key issues include job classifications and PRR practice of farming out repair work. The dispute has stretched over three years with no optimism for a quick resolution.
State Police announce a major personnel change effective September 1. Cpl Jon Horffick will be transferred to Warren and Troopers James M Morgan to Lawrence Park John E Martin to Franklin and Frederick Miller to Meadville. Replacements arrive from Meadville Lawrence Park Girard and Warren including Leonard Dajolse Gabriel G Babb Pasquale J Marsh and James G Rengers.
Cuba and North Korea deepen ties by signing a cultural cooperation treaty. Havana reports the agreement strengthens ideological alignment and exchanges in arts and education between the two communist states.
Brooks Rocks area police investigate a cabin break-in between August 14 and 27. Frederick Miles Jr of Erie reported loss of liquor beer boxes of shells a shotgun flashlight and a smashed lamp totaling about 45 dollars. Police note prior break-ins in the isolated area.
Barbara Powers arrived in Washington still unhappy with the U S response to her husband Francis Gary Powers, the U2 pilot imprisoned in the Soviet Union. She declined questions, sobbed in New York, collapsed briefly at the airport, then spoke to reporters saying the government should do more.

Mail will still move via trucking and HIPo routes, with Corry Post Office coordinating with PRR for potential direct mail delivery. Erie Railroad to handle outbound mail to Pittsburgh nightly. track upgrades on the Chautauqua Division promised by the federal government, boosting speeds and traffic through Titusville Corry and Brocton after Kinzua Dam impacts. Corry becomes part of the Chautauqua Division due to Salamance Division abandonment.
Cardinal John Cardial O Hara will be buried at the University of Notre Dame where he studied taught and served as president for twenty years His body will be transported to the university after a funeral service on Labor Day at Notre Dame campus.
Four vehicles crashed late last evening in a Tastee Preeze parking lot on Route 6 three miles west of Corry. Claude Stearns, 56, was westbound and turned left when Andrew McCallum, 43, attempted to pass. The truck struck Stearns causing a chain reaction into two parked cars owned by William Halfast and Paul Auer. All occupants escaped unharmed. Damages totaled roughly $350 with minor bumper scratches on the Auer vehicle. Investigation continued at Corry substation.
The Spartansburg Community Fair Association will meet at 8 30 p m Thursday in the Spartansburg Grange Hall to prepare for the 39th fair set for September 18 17. Residents of Crawford Erie and Warren counties may compete in live stock vegetables and canners home products needlecraft and vocational industrial and agricultural projects. Events include the crowning of a queen on September 11th a parade at 2 pm and fireworks at 6 1 1 1 p m. An amusement rides set runs during the fair with The Triste Troupe high wire act featured.
