63 Die As Plane Falls Into Ocean

A four engine Air France Super Constellation diving toward Dakar Senegal plunged into the Atlantic during a landing attempt. All 63 aboard were killed or presumed dead after hull was found in 60 feet of water. Weather was cloudy as the plane circled for a third approach before vanishing.

Jamestown family among crash victims in Pa on Route 6

A Route 6 wreck near Honesdale, Pennsylvania killed three members of the Holdorf family from Jamestown, including Louise, John Jr., and Helen Holdorf. Louise Heldorf’s husband, James A Holdorf, and another son, Harry, were injured. The collision with a westbound tractor-trailer also left Earl Shafter Jr. with minor injuries.

Hitchhiking Fly Triggers Early Morning Corry Crash

Mrs Vaughn Kent 16 of Corry driving west on Wheelertown road near Union City swerved to swat a large fly and struck Gail Silman 38 of McKersport. Both cars suffered about 300 damage. Kent had a facial laceration but no hospital visit reported. Police continue investigation with possible charges pending.

No Hope To Avoid Pennsy AR Strike

Last minute mediation began to avert a September 1 strike paralyzing the Pennsylvania Railroad. National Mediation Board chair Francis A. ONeill met with the Transport Workers Union and railroad officials while public sessions were proposed. Union leader Michael J. Quill urged a joint public session. Greenough, PRR president, was to attend. About 25,000 non operating workers, and 5,000 more AFL system federation members, faced immediate furloughs as the walkout loomed. The dispute centers on job classifications and outsourcing repair work to outside firms.

Police Powers Invoked In Race-Torn Jacksonville

Emergency police powers were imposed in Jacksonville after two days of racial violence. Mayor Haydon Burns banned large street gatherings and unnecessary traffic at 10 pm Sunday. A 1,400 strong Negro rally urged federal action, while violence flared with vandalism and looting amid claims by the NAACP youth council to seek dialogue if progress does not come soon.

Peace Bonds Issued After Brook Street Sickle Incident

On Brook Street last week a man named Sawyer chased neighbor Arkind Burrows with a sickle prompting police action. Sawyer faced disorderly conduct charges, Alderman Auer set a hearing, postponed it due to counsel unavailability, then fined Sawyer 15 and costs and placed him under a peace bond. Burrows also received a peace bond.

Powers' Wife Leaves Paris After Moscow Visit

Barbara Powers, wife of convicted U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers, left Paris with a wave and a faint smile after a four day stay following her husband’s Moscow trial. She was escorted by her mother and her doctor and thanked Parisians for their kindness. She declined to discuss her husband’s fate as she prepared to depart.

Break-Ins Hit Centerville Area Stations This Weekend

State Police report a Centerville area break-in at Guy M. Fish service station netted burglars seven times and tools, eight boxes of spark plugs, and two boxes of cigars. Window entry and a short later spree at Beagle's Esso, West End Cut Rate, Zdarko's Super Diaper in Titusville, plus Cliffs Cafe on Route 5 suggests a coordinated rash of burglaries with a pinball machine opened and $10 to $16 in change stolen.

Death of waitress found in well after kidnapping

Mary Lily Roberts 17 was kidnapped from a lovers lane near Crab Orchard Lake by a blond gunman. She was found dead in a well at an abandoned farmhouse. FBi took over the investigation as fiancé John Bryant, 20, was wounded. Autopsy says shot through head. Two men cleared after alibi checks.

Bomb kills Jordanian Premier in Amman office

Premier Huxzi Majall of Jordan, 44, was assassinated by a time bomb in his Amman office. Two people died and 30 were injured, with a second blast in another government office reported unofficially. Majali's death was announced by Amman radio on orders of King Hussein.

Shark Spotted in Delaware Bay Near Wilmington

Gloucester New Jersey AP Coast Guard reports a shark about 10 to 12 feet long seen in Upper Delaware Bay. A patrol boat observed the animal a mile below the Delaware Memorial Bridge near Wilmington. Trapeze Star Carmen Rosalie Killed in 40-Foot Fall

In Kingston on Thames England trapeze artist Carmen Rosalie eighteen died after a forty foot fall during a circus rehearsal. Her father mother and brother all trapeze artists witnessed the accident and were with her at her bedside. her brother Carlos had previously broken his back in a fall five years earlier.

Prelate O Hara Of Philadelphia Succumbs At 72

John Cardinal O Hara archbishop of Philadelphia died at Misericordia Hospital at age 72 after surgery for peritonitis last week. The six foot one inch prelate led 1 515 000 Catholics and had held the red hat since December 1958. Funeral plans call for a solemn pontifical Mass at SS Peter and Paul Cathedral with services in state at the cathedral from Thursday until Labor Day.

Charge Woman After Disturbance on West Main Street

Opal Barr 29 of 718 West Main Street was arrested after a disturbance on West Main Street Saturday night. Police were called by a man reporting a fight. Barr arrived, began shouting, and was taken to the station. Alderman Porter Auer fined her $10 and costs $9 at a midnight hearing.
