First day registration reached 721 in the city, with broad turnout across wards. Registrars reported steady enrollments, noting a rise from last year and predicting heavy voting pressure as the September election nears.
A $75,000 twin motor transport amphibian with 19 aboard crashed in dense fog off Gloucester. All but one were rescued after two hours clinging to a raft. Edward Bamwell of Auburn Maine died. Survivors, including three women, reached Addison Gilmore Hospital with exposure and minor injuries. The Sikorsky plane was en route from Halifax to Boston, part of a new maritime services link.

John Sawchyn, a farmer from Wayne township, will face a hearing before Alderman Edward RP Shugart in Erie on September 3 on charges of breach of the peace and assault and battery. Sawchyn was arrested by Constable Shreve of Brie after a complaint by A J Foster, a former resident on Buclid Street. He bonded this morning for the September 3 hearing. A Chicago electrical storm flooded streets and damaged property, with fires and a Seminary dormitory rescue effort by students and President Dr John Timoth Stone amid $6,000 in damage.
A blast outside the Portuguese embassy in Madrid damaged two windows but caused no casualties. Police cordon off the area as investigators survey the scene.
Erie county WCTU plans the forty ninth annual convention at Bartlesville with Mrs Sylvia Bemis presiding. Notable events include Miss Gladya O'Donnell leading a field of pilots at Phillips Airport and Mary Harris Armour delivering a lecture on "The Glory of Going On."
Erie county men charged with arson and conspiracy in Erie county fires will head the list at the September term as grand jury convenes. L. K. Kaufman real estate dealer Frank C. Girardot insurance adjustor Henry Cornell and ariumas Shock will be cited by the grand jurors. A habeas corpus action by Kaufman Girardot and Cornell to dismiss charges on insufficient evidence will be ruled by Judge L. P. Rossiter. The four men also face Crawford county grand jury action on similar charges.
Pony Loestein of the 112th Regiment mail service walked from Corry to Franklin in one day arriving at 6 80 in the evening. He maintained an average six miles an hour and will stay in Franklin until Saturday before continuing to Meadville to deliver mail. An exhibition is planned at the State Armory under Company Af.
An early morning crash on the Til Jotson road near Clyde Rosa’s farm wrecked a Buick sedan carrying four orchestra members returning from Canadonia pavilion. One member suffered near fatal injuries, others escaped serious harm as the car overturned multiple times after attempting to pass another vehicle. The driver and riders’ identities are largely unrevealed, with only partial details available from Union City authorities.

The Erle Awiload plans to erect six shelter sheds on the eastbound platform near Canter Street to aid passengers in bad weather. Each shed will be about fifteen feet long and provide protection during rallies or other unfavorable weather. Mica Targarst Connell to city this noon to visit relatives.
Spokane reports Waldron Creek blaze west of Chateau Montana has taken four additional victims. Bodies not yet identified. Harrisburg notes Pinchot appoints Capt Albert H. Stackpole from Bayrlsburg to lead as vice chairman of the State Aeronautics Commission.
Charles M. Rosenthal reappeared at a Bronx police station claiming he had been kidnapped for about 17 days amid reports of a $100000 ransom. He said captors released him at 158th Street and Walton Avenue and gave $10 for a taxi.
Mrs. Margaret Brown 38 of 1235 Rankin Avenue, mother of six, hanged herself in the attic after a nurse left the home. Coroner Dan Hanley found no clear reason for the act. Her husband Benjamin Brown is hospitalized in Maryland after a gasoline burn years earlier.
Erie automotives report a serious crash two miles from Erie on Waterford road. An In- Ginna car left the highway, struck a pole, overturned and caught fire. Occupant injuries were not learned. The car was completely destroyed. Mr and Mrs Milton Spaulding left today for Cleveland during the week end.
London reports a major shift in British leadership as Arthur Henderson is elected leader of the Parliamentary Labor Party in place of J Ramsay MacDonald. John H Clynes named deputy. Labour declared official opposition to the national government amid party upheaval and policy reversals.
Donald Gilbert, 20, of White Plains, was killed near Erie when the motorcycle he rode skidded. Theodore E Taylor, 21, also of White Plains, operated the bike at the time. Gilbert was en route to Cleveland.
Corry motorists report a new short cut to Erie via Waterland Road. The route, named Fle Wave, completes a loop through life wood curves and Elecvia Street, easing local travel and connecting major streets. Community officials project faster commutes and reduced congestion on main arteries.
