Engineers Recommend Erie Harbor Depth to 27 Feet

Army Engineers testifying before a House Public Works subcommittee in Washington urged modifying the SOTLWW project at Erie to provide a harbor depth of 27 feet to match St. Lawrence Seaway depths. The subcommittee opened hearings yesterday on Erie navigation and similar proposals for 14 other Great Lakes harbors. Carlton Smith, city treasurer, reminded taxpayers that August 1 is the final day to take advantage of a two percent rebate on school tax bills. Local people have one week to act before a higher tax burden due to net sales increases, and Jamestown reports new product lines and strong earnings growth. Water restrictions persist with a new low well reading of 29.9 feet, down 22 feet from a few weeks ago. Police investigated corn theft near St Elizabeth's Cemetery, finding scattered corn and several crashed cars on the highway. Four pairs of children’s eyeglasses were turned in at the station.
