Farm tenancy to lose bulge started in ’33
Washington Aug 26 Government farm lending agencies estimate they slowed the rise in tenancy by more than 60 percent in the past year. The Farm Security Administration through Federal Land Banks and plan to lend farmers about 75 million dollars in the year started July 1 to back payments on 25 000 farms. Tenancy rose 40 000 a year between 1935 and 1937. Officials said the figure was about the same in 1966 and 1937. They estimate 48 out of every 100 farmers till land with no equity. The Farm Credit Administration says it helps nearly 2 000 farmers climb to land ownership each month. The FDA has financed 55 000 farm purchases since its 1995 creation. The 12 Federal Land Banks advanced 130 000 000 long term loans to enable purchases. Despite lower farm prices the demand for loans to own land remains strong, about as heavy as any time since the upswing began in 1985. FP Hill PCA deputy governor said.
