Half of beet sugar crop unsold claims no shortage
San Francisco reports that about 750000 bags of beet sugar remain unsold in the American Beet Sugar Company's hands. Robert Oxnard, company president, testified before the U S grand jury that markets could not absorb the sugar at any price near current quotes. District Attorney Wreaton and Attorney Prevost commented that Eastern refiners are not fearing shortage, merely holding stock, with witnesses noting no cane sugar purchases by Southern refiners as federal sugar and food price concerns rise since the war opened.
