Westinghouse plant strike closes Sharon divider plant
A large Westinghouse transformer division plant in Sharon Mercer County shut down as Local 617 CIO IUE called a strike after unresolved grievances. About 7,400 workers are employed with around 5,000 CIO IUE members while others are with the Federation of Westinghouse Employers. Picket lines formed at all entrances and the midnight shift went home as management stated the plant is closed. The dispute stems from exhausted grievances cited by George Gunesch, Local 617 business agent. Meanwhile at Cedar Point five swimmers began a 20 mile Lake Erie race for a $500 prize from Pelee Island to the resort, with entrants including William Badle Ralph Albanese Clarence Murray Carlos Burns and Jerry Kerschner.
