President Eisenhower urges allied support for a West European defense system and appeals to France and Italy to approve, while noting 1.7 billion in military aid. He critiques doom-sayers and pushes for stronger GOP control as November elections loom.
Camper, 62, of R D 4, drove west on West Pleasant Street when he lifted a handkerchief to blow his nose and apparently closed his eyes. His car struck a parked auto owned by Marion Jagel, 85, at 217 West Pleasant Street, forcing $200 damage to Camper’s right front and $159 to Jagel’s rear.
An inquest into Emilie Dionne's death at a Quebec Catholic hostel concluded the 20-year-old quintuplet died accidentally from seizure-related suffocation. Coroner Jean Tuition cited recommendations on medical care in the home and said the private report to the attorney general warned about unattended periods and epileptic seizures, with testimony from nuns and a provincial medical expert.
Four Brooklyn youths once bragged about their violence. They fled in shock when shown the slain man Menter, 34, identified by his brother. Police say the gang confessed to nine attacks including a worker and a 43-year-old steeplejack, with one drowning. The four are held without bail.
The Army announced that the 25th and 2nd Infantry Divisions will be withdrawn from Korea in the immediate future but not as units. General Maxwell D. Taylor said there will be considerable shuffling of personnel in these two divisions to prioritize men with long service in Korea. Two other divisions slated to leave Korea this year have not yet been identified.
An engineer from the State Department of Forests and Waters visited Columbus and advised preparations for rebuilding the Columbus Dam. The Municipal Authority announced a work bee at the spillway Saturday at 1 p.m. with work continuing Sunday. Local sportsmen cottage owners and volunteers are urged to attend bringing axes. coffee and iced cake will be provided.
A truck was demolished on Route 8 a half mile north of Union City. George Oswald 38 of Union City and Joseph Klapec 23 of Ol City were the drivers. Oswald traveling south sideswiped Klapec traveling north, then Oswald’s truck rolled into a phone company pole. Oswald had a bruise and laceration on the left wrist. Klapec’s truck was lightly damaged. Utility pole replacement cost $150. truck damage about $450.
A Jamestown driver formerly from Corry was cited at 1 AM after allegedly speeding through a stop sign at Maple Avenue and East Washington Street and colliding with a second auto driven by John Froncek, 39, of Corry. Lindstrom fled but returned, and Froncek, who lacked a license, faced separate charges. Rosedahl of Jamestown was hospitalized briefly. Lindstrom’s license issues and a suspended license for Froncek were noted.
The Army plans an atomic power plant that can be disassembled for remote bases. A working model will be built at Fort Belvoir Virginia at under eight million dollars. It should operate in two to three years and could heat and power homes for about 1,100 people at peak. The initial high cost may be offset by reduced fuel transport. Thirty three firms have shown interest and are invited to bid.
Two Corryites were fined for drunken and disorderly conduct after a late night fracas on East Main street. Mrs Charlotte B Johnson of 144 West Main was taken into custody following a complaint from the European Hotel. Laver Davis of 24 West Park Place was also removed to the city jail. Both appeared before Police Magistrate M. S. Cobbett for hearings. Johnson paid 35 dollars in fines this afternoon, while Davis faces 30 dollars in fines plus costs and possible county jail time if unpaid. In a separate matter, Harry Walsh of Brownsville, Pa, filed a 32000 suit against the Independent Brotherhood of Fualrand Trainmen, alleging illegal dismissal from his post as a legislative representative after being removed by former president A F Whitney. Walsh did not disclose reasons for action. union spokesman unavailable.
The Newville Pennsyl farm will be first to operate an all electric dairy setup. On a 280 acre site farmer Blamy can clean the barn, grind feed, and unload supplies with button or knob controls. Project features include $30,000 worth of electric equipment and wiring installed by National Electric Contractors Association. Jack Lange of PP&L says the system will double labor efficiency for the 36 year old farmer.
President Eisenhower appealed to 170 million Christians at the World Council of Churches urging a prayerful drive for swift lasting peace. Clergymen greeted his remarks with applause as he urged a global day of prayer and called for spiritual leaders across denominations to unite for just and lasting peace.
Dr Samuel Sheppard 30 pleaded innocent at arraignment in Cleveland and declined bail. Lawyer William Corrigan and co counsel Pred Garmone stood with him as the judge set no bail. Sheppard indicted for bludgeoning his five year old pregnant wife. Grand jury returned the indictment last Tuesday. He had been free on 50000 bond for one day before re arrest. Police report Waterford Beverage Co Route 19 burgled overnight and an inventory is in progress.
W A McCarthy, district manager for A and P, said the chain has long sought a larger, more modern Corry store and is considering three sites: the Corry Jamestown plant site, an East Washington Street location near Thompson bowling pin plant, and the Ajax Iron Works parking lot at Moit and West Washington. He noted remodeling of the South Center street location could occur if chosen, but no decision has been made.
Washington report says Congress backed anti subversion measures but two key proposals from President Eisenhower stalled in committees. A compromise measure stripping the Communist Party of its legal privileges and forcing members to register passed both chambers 79 to 0 in the Senate and 265 to 2 in the House, though the broader wiretap and defense plant bills were left unresolved.
Mercer Pa Temple McAllister of Warren Ohio plans to challenge the Pennsylvania Milk Control Commission refusal to renew his license to sell milk in the state. The commission alleged he violated rules by selling buttermilk below the minimum price. McAllister said the order is not effective until heard by the county court and he expects to overturn it. If upheld, he will seek review in the State Superior Court with a Monday hearing expected.
Washington ODM announced the cancellation of its program to raise domestic aluminum output by 200 000 tons annually. A new survey of military civilian and defense needs indicates current capacity plus Canadian production and scrap secondary output plus stockpiles should cover mobilization needs for years.
The conference committee approved a compromise Social Security bill extending coverage to over 10 million more people and boosting benefits and taxes to support them. The measure, set for rapid House passage and quick Senate action, adds 8.6 million farm operators and broadens the tax base from 3,600 to 4,200 annual income. The final difference lies in which workers are covered.
The wills of two Corry men filed at the Erie County courthouse reveal estates totaling over 109000. Arthur L. Root died August 8 leaving 968402 in personal property and a Wright street home. his will directs equal division among four children, with a widow's occupancy of the home. Robert Franz’s will lists 20000 in personal property and 20000 in real estate including a half interest in Franz Furniture Co building. the entire estate goes to his wife Ellen Franz of Indiana, Pa.
A gaunt 11 year old youth admitted harming high school student Mary Jolene Frieas whose battered body was found near Toledo. Lucas County police said the 17 year old coed was dragged from her bicycle after failing to return from a rural mailbox trip. The boy named Bernard Schreiber confessed and implicated a 12 year old companion.
