Alcide de Gasperi former Italian premier and staunch European union advocate died at his north Italy retreat after a heart attack. He had stepped down from leadership eight months earlier, but his death ends a long fight against communism and a push toward Western alliance and European unity.
Directors at Corry Memorial Hospital held a routine monthly meeting noting ongoing repainting and that about half the patient rooms are redecorated. Last month 273 patients were admitted and received 1,174 days of service with an average daily census of 38 births five deaths and 73 operations by the surgical staff.

A severe storm with gusts up to 30 mph struck central Illinois from the Griggsville area east of Springfield to Decatur and Jacksonville. Trees uprooted and lines down, power outages in Springfield for days, and telephone service disrupted in some communities. At the state fairgrounds tents overturned and crowds of over 6 000 evacuated as Republican Day loomed. A 300 foot radio tower segment toppled five miles south of Springfield.
Rain and strong winds pounded Tokyo and central Japan as a Pacific typhoon weakened. No new casualties reported, but damage and missed docking in Yokohama were noted. Kyodo cited twenty dead, thirty six missing, and fifty eight injured in southern Japan, with millions in losses.

The U S attorney announced a new perjury indictment plan against Owen Lattimore a longtime Far Eastern adviser to the State Department The government may consolidate new charges with the original five counts if needed and will pursue additional evidence from Lattimore’s sworn Senate testimony to the Interal Security subcommittee in 1952 and 1953.
State Health Secretary Burwell E Teague received a valation for outstanding public health work in Pennsylvania at the 3rd annual Health Conference in State College. The award honored teamwork in the department, the state, the medical society, and the governor, with Dr J Thomas Millington elected president of the Health Association to succeed Dr Plelffer and officers named for 1986.
CorryNomsewives report a 10 cent coffee price drop effective today after a New York office announcement from the largest food retailer. A&P also reduces all coffee brands to 31.07 per pound with futures down for a third straight day as foreign exchange rules ease in Brazil.
Cuyahoga County officials say a palm print found at the lakefront home of Marilyn Sheppard belongs to her 10 year old son Chip. Prosecutor John J. Mahon says the print undermines the defense claim a stranger was in the house the morning of the murder. Dr. Samuel H Sheppard, 30, is indicted for first degree murder after his wife's death during childbirth. Police say the print is the only legible imprint found on a desk in the study after the struggle.
A Southeast Democratic Club was formed in Corry with William Allen as president and officers including William Akam, Mrs. Leo Rhynard, and Mrs. J. Z. Needham. The group aims to promote Democratic policies in southeastern Erie County and plan a September 8 meeting to set time and place for gatherings. The meeting was at Mrs. Rhynard’s Marion Street home.
The United States will pull two thirds of its ground strength out of Korea in a peacetime redeployment to mount a flexible defense against China and build a central strategic reserve at home. Four divisions will be withdrawn, Okinawa and Hawaii gain one division each, and Korea retains two U S divisions to bolster allied forces.
In Schongau Bavaria an American 20 ton atomic cannon slid from a two foot embankment during transport between twin trucks. Three crewmen were injured when the forward vehicle skidded and attempted to pass another car. Police reported no fatalities.
