Navy and Marine draft calls for September were reduced from 22 000 to 19 000 and 9 000 to 4 000 respectively, announced by Vice Admiral Randall Jacobs. Neighbors are helping with rebuilding efforts in the evenings.
Washington D C August 20 war time limits on natural gas use and gas burping equipment were removed today by the War Production Board. President Truman pushed postwar plans to the White House, assigning reconversion duties to Director John W Snyder and a special advisory committee headed by Truman Gibbs and Max Gardner of North Carolina with leaders from business labor and farm groups.
Harrisburg reports show Pennsylvanians hold the largest postwar savings in state history with over 3 billion in deposits across state and national banks and a national total near 8.0 billion including postal savings. Miss Maxine Walters sixteen suffered a fractured leg when Ford Roadster driven by George L. Cole veered into a six foot ditch near Spartansburg at two thirty Sunday morning. State Police from Cony sib station are investigating the crash.
ERIE Pa Aug 20 Ten year old Thomas Jasins drowned in Erie Bay while his younger brother Eugene watched. Investigations say the lad wandered into deeper water and sank. The body was recovered from the bay with a lifeless expression.
President Truman seeks widespread abolition of wartime agencies as reconversion accelerates. officials say price control will continue where needed and wage boosts await no government stamp. War Labor Board and related bodies to wind down while peacetime departments assume functions. Continued on page six.
A check up shows about 1600 dollars raised for the Baressi benefit ball game to be played next Friday night at Loveland Weld. Donations from Frank Ames, Dene Piccardi, and others push the total toward the 1500 mark as work by Fuser, the veterans group, and local supporters continues. The Corry lad wounded on Iwo Jima remains the charitable focus, with the Chautauqua A.C. team visiting at no cost and covering own expenses.
