All of Northern and Eastern Belgium forms a continuous battle line as British troops engage near Waterloo. Belgian garrisons abandoned siege forts and blew them up, signaling intensified fighting since yesterday morning.
British Army leaders concede Brussels may be captured soon as persistent cannonade vents through northern and eastern Belgium. Reports claim Liege forts destroyed, German advances threaten Brussels, with allied forces near Waterloo and France's Saarbrueck scene intensifying the Franco German clash.
Rome reports Pope Pius died this afternoon after a rapid decline in health. The Vatican had shown no effort to hide the deteriorating condition, and Henry Wood, United Press staff correspondent, transmitted the cable from Rome to New York at 2 26 pm.
Washington August 19 President Wilson names Attorney General McReynolds to the United States Supreme Court to succeed Justice Lurton. Simultaneously announced is the appointment of Thomas W. Gregory of Austin Texas as Assistant to McReynolds and to become Attorney General.
Washington August 19 The United States government will purchase outright all vessels possible for sending goods to Europe and importing to this country A bill of twenty five million dollars will be introduced immediately to fund this effort The plan includes government insurance on war risks across the Atlantic following a morning conference between President Wilson and the House leaders
Final wartime dispatches report Austrian merchant ship Emilie Taden captured by a French cruiser and its cargo seized. London notes Austrian vessel Dinnrah seized by French torpedo boats off Guerney. Rome cites Trieste claiming Austrians forced to abandon an invasion attempt as the day ends.
Two major fires struck farms north of Corry during a Tuesday night storm. Warren Thorpe’s Ming farm lost two large barns and hay while Charles Huntrey’s Spartansburg area barn and several young cattle perished. Telegraph and telephone lines were briefly disrupted as the storm swept through the region.
