The government and people move from wartime output to peacetime production. Tokyo ordered to send envoys to MacArthur and announce reconversion policy today. All manpower controls ended and steps are taken to favor veterans getting jobs. Army and Navy cancel contracts. Autographed press dispatch notes the shift.
Washington Aug. 15 Re conversion Director John W Snyder says the sudden ending of most war contracts will cause an immediate large dislocation in the economy with sharp temporary unemployment but not mass unemployment. He cites six highlights including immediate termination of military contracts and manpower controls, expected unemployment rising to millions within months, and the government lifting price and production controls as the nation shifts from war to peace production. President Truman calls it the Brestest task we have faced.
Corry Civilian Defense plans staged a prompt Victory parade after President Truman announced Allied terms with Japan. Veterans groups led the procession, followed by Corry’s returning servicemen and Ajax Tron Works display with life canons. The Union Thanksgiving service at First Methodist Church drew full attendance.
The Office of Price Administration announced immediate end to gasoline rationing and the rationing of canned fruits and vegetables and fuel oil. Meat fats sugar shoes tires remain controlled until civilian demand balances with military needs. Bowles hailed the move as a milestone and motorists can discard gasoline coupons, with tire policy to be clarified soon.
Guam Aug 15 A U S cruiser wrecked after delivering the first atomic bombs to Superforts at Guam. Fifteen minutes after two great explosions flames spread through the ship and she sank headfirst into the sea. About 900 officers and men were lost or missing, with survivors reporting chaos and suicides amid the night sea. Captain McVay provided details as rescue efforts continued and the tragedy unfolded.
A planned gathering of organization representatives for a war memorial was postponed due to the Japanese surrender news. Raymond A. Hosford, president of the Pennsylvania Association of Hospitals, spoke at Hotel Camp on Modern Hospital Planning and Costs. The session will be rescheduled to hear all views and decide on next steps.
The White House retracted a statement on August 15 about August holidays and said President Truman only intended to excuse government workers. A Domei dispatch claimed an imperial order is being transmitted to forces. An air raid by two Japanese plane teams struck near Okinawa, injuring two U.S. troops and prompting a blackout. In Harrisburg, Ralph Swalter, secretary of the State Board of Finance and Revenue, was found dead in bed from a heart attack.
In Corry a complete halt of commerce occurred as workers observed Japan's surrender. Factories Raymond’s Aero Corny Jamestown Ajax closed. retail shops and restaurants shut. post office operations reduced with no city deliveries. Only railway staff and police kept regular hours amid skeleton post office service.
Secretary Burkhart of the Corry Union City Selective Service Board received instructions from State Headquarters at Harrisburg to immediately curtail inductions following President Truman's order. Twelve men in the 18 through 25 age group from Corry Union City and nearby towns were released, all over 26, including Lynn Rote and Walter Burey. Additional men were selected for pre induction exams but postponed. In Philadelphia, 69-year-old John A. Ferges was killed accidentally while inspecting rifles at a Delaware County armory.
Heavy evening rain heavily stressed sewers as Center Street basements flooded. The Municipal Building basement filled with water, North Center street buildings and Hotel Corry basements reported water intrusion. The Brown blocks on North Center street suffered a cascade of water reaching the first floor.
In a joint action with the War Manpower Commission, Henry Stanczak announces lifting all manpower controls in the Erie administrative Area. The move ends employment callings, priority referrals, and stabilization rules, while management labor committees continue to guide local reconversion and veteran placement efforts.
The Ajax Tron Works revealed it fully restored the Cannon Lake relic from the Guy Parke era after wartime scrap metal use. J. H. Castor and C. F. Bliss preserved the Civil War relic, rebuilt its carriage, and returned the cannon to its position near the City Park monument as a community gift.
Emperor Hirohito accepted the cabinet's resignation and informed the nation that Japan's move to surrender was compelled to avoid obliteration. Reports say he sought restoration of Premier Sumuki and considered staying on, with a radio broadcast assigning blame to the atomic bomb and outlining Japan's plight.
