Truman Announces Jap Surrender Terms Acceptance

President Truman stated at 7 00 P M Eastern wartime announced Japanese acceptance of surrender terms. The message confirms Japan has agreed to end hostilities and lay down arms marking a historic move toward end of World War II.

MacArthur Named To Deal With Hirohito

General Douglas MacArthur designated Supreme Allied Commander to receive Japan's surrender, with Britain Russia and China represented by officers. Truman announced the Potsdam terms are accepted and offensive actions to be suspended until formal surrender signing. Selective Service to cut inductions from 80,000 to 50,000 monthly, draft targets under 26.

Heavy naval loss reported at sea in Pacific action

Washington reports the heavy cruiser Indianapolis was lost recently in the Philippine Sea to enemy action with total casualties numbering 1,196 officers and men. The ship’s loss marks a devastating naval disaster with all hands accounted as casualties.

Japan's surrender reply delivered to Byrnes in Washington

Japan's official reply to surrender terms was delivered to Secretary Byrnes by Max Grassli. Byrnes left his office for the White House at 6 12 P.M. Eastern War Time. Grassli, Swiss charge d'affaires, arrived at 6 05 P.M. and stood with the dispatch case. Grassli would not comment on the purpose of his visit.

Japan accepts Allied surrender terms and notes move

A series of dispatches report Japanese acceptance of Allied surrender terms. Shunichi Kase met Swiss officials in Bern and a note to the United States, Britain, China and Russia was telegraphed to Washington. Reports place the note delivery around 9 P. M. in Bern with further broadcasts from Basle and London. President Truman planned a news conference at 7 P. M. Eastern War Time.
