A general alarm blaze in Mahanoy City Pa damaged five three story structures near the town's main intersection. No serious injuries, four firefighters sent home after smoke exposure, one or two others treated for minor cuts. The fire began shortly after 2 a.m. and burned until 4 20 a.m. Light rain hindered efforts. Occupants escaped, adjoining structure spared by a fire wall. A vacant store may have sparked the blaze. shops and flats housed by the buildings were affected.
Authorities held three men in custody after a trap set at a Prudential Insurance Co office in suburban Ross Two. Police and Allegheny County detectives captured them shortly after 2 on Friday following a tipped holdup plan.
A former Corry resident Angeline Kerstetter 64 was killed instantly when a car crossed the center line and hit her westbound vehicle near Wellsboro. Her husband William and the other driver Andrew Abplanalp 77 were hospitalized in critical condition with crushed chests and other injuries. The crash occurred in heavy rain with Kerstetter en route to Corry and Abplanalp traveling eastbound local police said. Survivors include son Roy and two daughters Ann Long and Betty Higby. Funeral arrangements are pending.
