Rivers calls for full arsenal if Red China moves in Vietnam

Rep. L Mendel Rivers says the United States must be prepared to attack Mao Zedong's homeland with every gadget in the arsenal if Red Chinese troops move into Vietnam. He stops short of urging a nuclear strike, but warns that a popgun reply would not stop them. Critics say his comments hint at preventive action against China's nuclear installations. The remarks were made in Hartford Connecticut during a speech and drew immediate scrutiny in Washington.

Viet Troops Call 250 Reds In Mekong Delta Fight

Vietnamese government forces say about 250 Viet Cong were killed or estimated dead in a Mekong Delta sweep 90 miles southwest of Saigon.156 Viet Cong killed in ground fighting and 100 estimated killed by air strikes, with light government casualties. US sources call figures “pretty good” though no complete body count.

Lightning disrupts power and TV service in Spartansburg

A lightning bolt struck a Pennsylvania Electric substation on Second Avenue causing over $2,000 equipment damage and power outages across a wide area including Spartansburg and Raymond Mfg. Division. Service was restored by mid morning after safety fuses blew and repairs continued. The Corry TV Cable Company also affected with later restoration.

Military Pay Increase Approved by Congress

AP reports Congress approved an $80 million monthly military pay hike starting September pending President Johnson's signature. The annual rise exceeds a billion dollars, more than double Johnson's initial offer, pushed through by Rep. L Mendel Rivers to avoid a lengthy conference. The Senate sealed the bill with unanimous support. The raise chiefly benefits officers and enlisted personnel with under two years’ service.

Wildcat strike idles 1000 at Greenville Steel Car Co

More than 1,000 workers remained off the job for a second day at Greenville Steel Car Co a railroad car maker as negotiations continued with the Greenville Car Builder's Association an independent union. Reports say the strike followed an employee firing and a scheduling dispute. Union President John D. said the walkout was not authorized.

Corry man Eugene Sweet 46 remains in satisfactory condition at Corry Memorial Hospital with chest and left arm bruises and fractured ribs after a sideswipe crash on the Corry Findley Lake road. Arthur W. Giacoma 36 of 765 South Center Street was fined 10 dollars and costs for failure to keep right at a curve before Justice R. E. O Dell. The accident occurred about a mile north of the Pennsylvania New York line with extensive property damage reported.

Pacifists Try to Stop Troop Train Outbound to Asia

In Berkeley California AP two arrests and four injuries marked a protest as about 300 pacifists blocked an 11 car Santa Fe troop train heading to Oakland Army Terminal bound for South Viet Nam. Supporters of U S actions jeered from the sidelines. It was the third such demonstration.

Nam Is The Key Call To Corry Guards For Viet Nam Duty

Corry guardsmen from Company A 1st Battalion 112th Infantry head to Camp A P Hill Virginia for the annual two week summer training. Two locals James M Davison and James K Donaldson Jr are tapped for 20 week active duty at Fort Jackson South Carolina before returning to finish six year enlistments with the Corry unit. The 28th Division extends to 800 men nationwide for the basic camp reflecting Viet Nam draft pressures. Capt Archie Woodin leads the Corry and Warren units to Pittsburgh then by plane to Richmond Virginia.

A West Side crowd attacked cars and the fire station after a woman was killed when a fire truck, answering a false alarm, veered off course and hit a street sign. Police arrested 16, one officer injured, motorists treated for facial cuts as shots and rocks endangered bystanders.
