FDIC premium rates continued with no near term cuts
In Cleveland and Meadville reports, FDIC chair Lea Crowley says the $6 million profit does not imply immediate premium reductions. Five years of experience needed to set long term rates, as the FDIC expands to 14,118 banks. Crowley notes Congress must approve rate changes, with interim recommendations possible. The agency started in August last year, taking in $28 million in premiums and forecasting over $8.5 million annual income, while expenses cap at $2.5 million. Losses through ten months totaled about $4.815 million, largely from loans and asset purchases to avert bank failures or aid mergers. About $100,000 in U.S. government baby bonds sold via Meadville post office.
