President William Green announced the American Federation of Labor will remain neutral in the national election. The federation rejects a labor front led by the Non-Fartisan Labor League to back Roosevelt, stressing its traditional nonpartisan stance amid internal Labor League tensions and calls for labor support.
Government officials in Germany view Russia’s plan to raise its army from 1.2 million to 1.8 million and lower conscription age to 19 or 49 as a dangerous move. German ambassador to Britain Joachim von Ribbentrop seeks British support to counter France and Czechoslovakia, aiming to blunt Russian influence in Europe. Moscow confirms the plan, signaling immediate effect.
Corry Rotary Club arranged special entertainment features for Ws Weekly dinner at Hotel Corry last evening. United Press reports five persons were buried under debris when an acetylene tank exploded at the Grainger Brothers Wholesale Grocery building in Lincoln Nebraska. Two men were pulled from the bricks and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Pittsburgh steelflow reports show a six year high in blast furnace activity with thirty seven furnaces in operation. The Pittsburgh Steel Company reopened its fat furnace and now runs two furnaces for the first time since 1929 amid vacation slowdowns at National Tube Company and Pittsburgh Steel. Some plants asked key workers to postpone vacations to avoid order delays.
United Press reports union leaders discussed a possible general strike in Syracuse after a Remington Rand shooting, as two strikers were wounded with buckshot. Central Trades and Labor Assembly demanded removal of Capt. Blanchard or National Guard deployment. Wen Gelso traveled to Rochester to confer with AFL leader William Green on the strike option.
Sixty three American men remain in Madrid with women and children at the American embassy as the civil war continues. A party of Americans expected to depart Madrid yesterday boarded the U S cruiser Quincy at Valencia on the east coast.
Harrisburg reports Governor Earle will accompany President Roosevelt as they tour western Pennsylvania flood district. He will fly from Saratoga Springs to join the presidential party at Johnstown tomorrow.

They unanimously rejected a 400000 plan by the Department of Forests and Waters to turn the park into a Coney Island style site. Members James Mead Martin Mayer Robert M Thompson Dr Guy C Boughton Patrick J Grant and others said they would oppose change while they remain on the commission.
Colonel John C. Pender, 70, longtime familiar figure on eastern rate tracks, will be buried tomorrow in Johnstown Pennsylvania. He died after a complication of diseases.
A farmer was severely cut about the body when run over by a reaping machine near Concord. A boy, Lindsey Linley, 14, sustained a badly cut left foot with an ax at home. one of the lines was amputated and other injuries reported. Mrs Vailovieth and her mother assisted in rescue. The farmer was rushed to Cuery hospital with no broken bones per X-ray.
Kansas Labor League leader Leslie Doud accuses Governor Landon and his administration of being controlled by big business interests. The report alleges a direct link between Landon and Kansas utility leaders, a state chamber president, and the Kansas Emergency Relief administration. Doud says relief and school funds are mismanaged, calling Kansas a backward state in union matters.
New York reports Massachusetts Democratic chairman Joseph McGrath says Alfred E. Smith will be warmly received only if he opposes President Roosevelt in Boston. McGrath, who backed Smith in 1928, joins New England leaders and National Chairman James A. Farley in consultations. He warns Smith not to come to Boston to speak. He recalls Smith’s 1923 loyalty and notes disappointment over his party withdrawal.
Pittsburgh Aug 12 Governor Alt a Landon has cancelled a New Castle visit and will speak in the afternoon at his birthplace 19 West Middlesex. G Edward Green secretary of the state committee on arrangements announced the plan.
Three thousand followers gathered in Altoona to hear Dr. Francis Townsend and Rev. Gerald L. K. Smith denounce the major parties. They announced the newly formed Union party would push government adoption of the Townsend plan.
Miss Iva Ruska, 28, and Mrs Herschel Orn, both of Erie, died when their auto crashed into a truck near Port Burgh Ontario yesterday. They were traveling with MP Corn on a vacation trip through Canada. Corn was injured but not critically. An inquest will be called.

Attorney Tulined Lo Aid seeks permission for two alienists to examine Moots as part of the defense The Buncombe county grand jury is to meet Monday and Moots is expected to go to trial before Judge Donald Phillips on degrees involving burglary The court notes delay anticipated due to the insanity plea.

Joseph Barish a 21 year old from Pittsburgh died in Ridgway hospital from injuries after a tank struck a ditch and crushed him. The vehicle was driven by Warren Hahing of Kersey during the Saturday incident. Separately Elaine Barrid, protege of actor John Barrymore, said she has broken her engagement with him.
