U S Presses For Cyprus Peace

U S diplomats seek a quick permanent Cyprus ceasefire and a withdrawal of 5 000 to 7 000 professional soldiers since Makarios last December. They estimate 4 000 to 6 000 Greek side fighters and under 1 000 from Turkey, amid hopes for Geneva talks under a UN mediator and an end to Greek Cypriot attacks. The 6th Fleet stands by, with one destroyer ready to evacuate 450 Americans if needed. The Greek Cypriot government reportedly asked the Soviet Union to intervene militarily, though no evidence supports Moscow’s response.
