Phones Still Offer Busy Signals and Old Telephone Era

A retrospective look at early telephone directories notes the 1912 book in the “good old days” when lines in Colum bus and surrounding towns listed merchants and residents by name. It recalls the Rex Manufacturing Co on Eagle street, Walter L. Peake, the Columbus Hotel, the Erie Railroad Depot, Lake Park, and East Branch Telephone Co with 27 subscribers. It contrasts toll rates and the expense of calling outside the local area with admiration for early phone companies.

Kennedy Kids' Sidewalk Stands Close Amid Busy Traffic

In Hyannisport Massachusetts nieces and nephews of John F Kennedy ran sidewalk stands selling postcards medallions and souvenirs to fund a Kennedy Memorial Library in Boston. They earned nearly fifty dollars in two days attracting tourists who learned the young merchants identities. Traffic officials were called to ease congestion and the children reluctantly closed shop after proving too successful. Participants included Maria Shriver and others related to Robert F Kennedy and the Kennedy clan.
