Expanded Math and Science Program Urged in Schools
Pennsylvania high school teachers push for stronger math and science curricula with shifts toward earlier science courses and advanced subjects. A Department of Public Instruction survey of 900 teachers shows 82 percent of science teachers want general science moved to grades 7 and 8, with biology chemistry and physics in grades 8 through 11 and a senior year in advanced science. Two thirds of math teachers favor early math expansion and teaching college algebra calculus and trigonometry to younger students. Both groups call for better K-12 coordination and continuous K-12 courses, curriculum specialists covering grades 1-13, plus more workshops and joint committees for elementary and secondary teachers.
