Smallest Potato Acreage Planted In Pa In History
HARUSBURG Aug 7 From the smallest potato acreage ever recorded in Pennsylvania farmers will harvest the third smallest crop in 51 years, state agriculture reports. As of July 1 only 83,000 acres are planted, down from 95,000 last year and 100,000 in 1886. Despite the low acreage, improved methods and disease control will yield a record high 200 bushels per acre, totaling about 18,600,000 bushels. Pennsylvania’s 1951 crop is 19 percent under 1950, with late blight reported in most districts by mid July. For the nation, yield prospects are excellent though acreage declined, with an expected 355 billion bushels, enough to meet requirements, and no federal price support for potatoes this year after Pennsylvania growers voted down the program last year.
