At Edwards Air Force Base California Joe Walker set an unofficial speed of 2150 mph in the X15 rocket plane, surpassing Milburn Apt's prior record. Apt died when his X2 failed after reaching 3094 mph. Walker landed safely after descent from 78,000 feet, watched by Grace Walker as newsmen were briefed.
Sen John F Kennedy flies to New York to address ethnic newspaper editors and meet German official Felix Von Eckhart as part of a broad effort to win support from national groups. He plans Midwest farm talks with Lyndon B Johnson, and unveils a Farm Progress policy committee led by Iowa Governor Loveless. Kennedy downplays fund raising, while courting Poles Italians and other immigrant communities.
Union City area School Board meets Monday to consider Miss Nancy Johnson of Corry for third grade teaching post. The board will review a site committee expansion report by Dr Harald Gooper and accept resignations. Supervising Principal LeRoy Brest confirms the term starts September 7, with no delay. The board will act on reimbursement forms to the State Council of Education for expansion costs.
Roland A. Kennedy, 65, longtime editor of the Waukegan News Sun, died after a long illness. He previously served as managing editor for the Green Bay Press Gazette.
DINIA Florida report notes a 22 year old caregiver for six siblings prepared a deadly meal for the children. Dor othy May age 4 Marilyn Juanita age 9 and Charles age 1 died after ingesting a mix of guava fruit pancake powder onion salt spices and roach poison. Two other children survived with serious injuries. Ernest Nuby left in charge of the children while at work.
Three labor unions picket Quality Master Markets on North Center street and nearby locations in western New York and Pennsylvania today. Rollin Reading, executive vice president, says the firm seeks a free election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board rather than a forced union, with Amalgamated Meat Cutters Retail Clerks and Teamsters involved. The company denies anti union stance but insists on democratic process before any unionization. One AFL CIO unionist walks the North Center street beat while no pickets are seen at the First avenue store.
A United Airlines DC6B with 48 passengers and five crew made an unscheduled stop at Williamsport Lycoming County Airport after a bomb scare. Passengers and crew evacuated as authorities searched the aircraft. a prior Williamsport scare three months earlier was ruled a hoax after about four hours. A separate report from Laon France notes Major Ned N Sweitzer, Jersey Shore Pa, lost his ten year old son Robert in a car crash on July 29.
Senator Estes Kefauver captured a decisive Tennessee Democratic primary victory over Judge Andrew Taylor, winning about 433,000 to 220,000 with 2381 of 2635 precincts reporting. The result, seen as a referendum on civil rights proposals, drew national attention as the longtime incumbent touted liberal positions and Taylor faced backlash amid tense segregation debates.
Theresa Vuceleo a German speaking mother admitted killing her son and two daughters after slashing wrists and throat with a knife in Hudson New York. Police said she wrote the admission in German in a note given to a trooper at Columbia Memorial Hospital. No motive was established and her condition was listed as serious.
South Korea awarded the North Korean defector pilot 10 million won, about 15 980 at official exchange rate, with plans for a decoration and a scholarship after cabinet review. The 24 year old second lieutenant Obung Nake Hyun is under questioning by U S and South Korean intelligence.
The United States urged the Soviet Union to free two American airmen held in custody and permit an impartial United Nations inquiry into the RB47 shoot down. Washington released a formal note accusing the Soviets of detaining 10 men and sealing them off from the outside world, while Moscow claimed the bomber entered Soviet airspace. Co-pilot Lt Freeman B. Olmstead and navigator Lt John R. McKone survived, with pilot Maj Willard George Palm buried at Arlington. the fates of two other crewmen remain unknown.

CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP NASA says it will attempt next Tuesday to launch a 100 foot balloon communications satellite into Earth orbit. The agency reports it has solved the rocket problems that ruined the first attempt on May 9, last year.
Citizens Bank completed the purchase of a rectangular parcel west of the Berliner building on West Main street to extend its expansion plans to the Texas lunch building. The land, once a parking area, was owned by Mrs. P. B. Sonoski. The bank had already acquired the Cherry Hardware building and the Berliner structure as part of its growth plan. President Charles Bracken said the new tract runs from West Main street to the alley through the block between West Main and West South streets.
The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo says the guided missile submarine Grayback, docked at Yokosuka for repairs, carries no nuclear weapons on board. The claim addresses Japanese government concerns about armament on the submarine currently stationed in Japan.
