The United Nations Security Council returns to the Korean War issue after defeating a three day Russian attempt to sidetrack the matter. The council voted 4 to 1 to take up a united resolution condemning North Korea and urging all countries to support the defense.
Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Jakob Malik was shaken but unharmed in a rear end collision as he traveled from Lake Success to Manhattan after chairing a council meeting. The clash sparked bitter exchanges as the UN Security Council debated seating Nationalist China and its implications for Korea and peace. Malik defended Soviet leadership while American and other delegates pressed for procedural votes and possible peace options.

Harrisburg August 4 The next seven months will tell if federal and state relief allowances for food and clothing will rise as a result of the Korean War emergency. Deputy Public Assistance Secretary Robert P. Wray said prices may only be a temporary flare and may roll back. He noted meat and clothing costs have jumped and a rent cap possible by Congress may affect future relief.
