In WAURISBURG August 3 Associated Press writer says Lewis G. Wiles, labor secretary, urges a new payroll of civil service job lists with over $1800 annual pay under the unemployment compensation bureau. Babson predicts brighter business prospects with moderate price gains in farm goods and living costs. He notes firm demand for foodstuffs in Europe limited by Britain’s blockade, expects higher dairy, canned goods, cattle, and hog prices this fall, and foresees steady retail growth and dividend income as taxes rise. Stocks appear cheap relative to earnings, with selection in steels, falls, and munitions likely to lead gains.
The analysis notes machinery and retail trade as best placed, with interest rates low and high-grade bonds weak. Second-grade bonds like rails gain a tactical edge due to tax and traffic, while the Treasury must fund a vast defense program. Foreign trade should stay robust, offsetting losses in Europe with gains in South America and possibly the Far East. The forecast insists on stable business for six months regardless of election outcomes, and warns living standards won’t rise until more goods are produced.
