Lightning strikes Findley Lake cottage injuring resident

Mrs. R. Johnson of North Center Street and her husband vacationing at Findley Tacks escaped serious harm when lightning struck a tree near the cottage and entered a bedroom during a severe Sunday morning storm. The window shattered and walls splintered but damage was not heavy and Mrs. Johnson is recovering from the fright. Nearby, a strike at Rumpus Ridge prompted onlookers to warn others before flames could spread. The storm was among the lake resort’s most severe in memory.

United Press reports Matthew Woll, AFL vice president, urged John D. Rockefeller Jr to restore prior wage levels after United States Steel reduced dividends not wages and Colorado fuel miners faced a 20 percent cut. Woll warns of world turmoil if wage cuts spread. Girl Hurled From Car In Local Crash Injures 16-Year-Old

Lillie Baker, 16, of Grand Valley, was severely injured when she was thrown from the rumble seat of a Chrysler driven by William Dingfelder after a collision with a Willys Knight owned by Charley Hulings and driven by Gerald Hulings at Center and Church streets. She suffered a fractured rib and severe bruises but was rapidly improving the next day. The other occupants escaped with minor injuries. both cars were towed to a garage. Patrolman Flannigan investigated.

100 Lives In Peril as Ship Burns

Two fishing trips went tragically wrong off Sandy Hook and in the Hudson River. Walter James 27 and Charles Enrens 36 died when their Jersey City bound Rinelde capsized after a collision. Chimeesne Decker survived only briefly as others were saved by a coast guard cutter and a fishing vessel. Seventy seven aboard the Usona escaped after a fire forced passengers to jump into the water.

Graveling of East South Street Adds City Work

Work resumed today on graveling East South Street from East Street to near Harding School. A new crew will be used this week to spread employment as the project continues. The graveling is complete from Hast to William Street and will move eastward, with Brooke Street also set for improvements under the program to provide jobs.

Lindbergh Leaves Churchill for Lake Flight Run

Col. Charles A. Lindbergh and Mrs Lindbergh departed Churchill at 12 15 p m in a pontoon equipped mono plane bound for Baler Lake about 377 miles away. An air mishap reported elsewhere left pilots injured in Michigan.

Tanker J Norman Riley Fire Off Arthur Kill

Aboard the tanker J Norman Riley in Arthur Kill near Woodbridge New Jersey a fire broke out today. The vessel reportedly carried about 25 005 gallons of gasoline and shore observers say 75 000 gallons were in its holds while the crew was safely removed as a precaution amid several explosions.
