In Corry a drive issues prosperity checks signed by 50 merchants to boost $9,000 in next 30 days. Checks usable like currency when endorsed and passed, must be spent in Corry within 24 hours of receipt or to pay bills and buy merchandise. The program hopes to stimulate retail activity and personal prosperity.
Pennsylvania National Guardsmen of the 213th Coast Artillery under Col Clarence J. Smith conclude field duty at Mt Gretna. Staff and units including the 103rd medical regiment and 108th medical greet visitors tomorrow as officers inspect lines for company efficiency while Major General William Price Jr decorates colors.
Pittsburgh August 1 a week after the citys worst institutional disaster the death toll in the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for Aged Sire has grown to 45 with the death last night of Patrick Patterson in St Francis Hospital. Plans for rehabilitation are under way. Bishop Hugh Boyle pledged 400 priests of the Pittsburgh diocese to a fund drive and a campaign set for August 16. Survivors are housed in various Catholic institutions or with relatives. about sixty remain in hospitals. Investigations by coroner Bishop Boyle and fire chief McGregor will lead to an inquest starting Tuesday. Funeral services for unclaimed dead will be held Monday.
A union service is planned for Sunday evening at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ed Clark of Erie City Mission as speaker. The Spiritual Jubilee Singers of Charleston will perform several numbers and have attracted large crowds during their local appearances. They are known for cable programs and are scheduled to sing for Billy Sunday evangelistic meetings this fall and winter.
Centerville near midnight Friday saw a two-vehicle wreck involving a Whippet coupe carrying a Pittsburgh couple and an Oldsmobile driven by a Union City undertaker. No fatalities. the Pittsburgh car rolled two to three times and sustained heavy damage. The woman passenger suffered painful injuries treated by Dr. Harry Hatch. Both drivers were deemed at fault for driving too near the road center. The Pittsburgh car was towed from the ditch. the occupants later left by train to Pittsburgh after treatment and arrangements for the Nicone Tight train delay.
The Department of Property and Supplies announced awards for 40 motorcycles to Indian Motorcycles G at Springield Mass for IT support. Other awards include Westinghouse Medical Supply Co for electrics at Western Penitentiary, Marshall Field Co for 20,000 yards blue denim for Western Penitentiary, Loder api Sharp for two graders for Board of Fish Commissioners at Reynoldsville and Pleasant Mount, Spalding Co Chicopee for ey matsium equipment for State Teachers College California, G H Miller Co for piste glass windows at Pennsylvania Industrial Reformatory Huntingdon.
Samuel B. Smith of Titusville recalls drilling the first oil well with his father two miles from town for Col Edwin L Drake. The 1859 operation will be commemorated as a park funded by a 1931 assembly bill and Petroleum Nature of America efforts aiming for about 40 thousand dollars. Smith, Civil War veteran, is the sole surviving crew member and lives with his daughter and son-in-law.
In Pittsburgh and across the tri state area, communists and the National Miners Union schedule meetings today to protest war and support the coal mine strike. Officials say no permit is known to have been granted, though a Tabor press release cites a permit for West Pale North Side.
News from Omsk reports Clyde Panghorn and Hugh Herndon Jr. landed short of their planned non-stop world flight to Irkutsk. Eleven persons released from Reading hospitals after ptomaine poisoning at a Thursday picnic. The illness affected at least 75 people and baffled physicians as no common food item tied the cases. Rapid recovery surprised doctors.
Forty five members of Corry local of the Dairymen's League Cooperative Association joined five hundred attendees at the league's annual picnic and outing at Celoron Park. Covington Kentucky reports five people drowned when a six foot wall of water flooded Lick Creek eight miles southwest of the city after a cloudburst. Mrs Iola Lucas 27 and her twin children Ruth and James 7 perished along with Mrs Martha Miller 31 and Mary Lou Harvey 5. Volunteers recovered four bodies near the spot where the mother was swept away.
Charles P. MacDonald a 49 year old DuBois dentist was held by state police on concealed weapons and attempted assault charges. He said he fled a murder plot after being guided to a swamp cabin by James H. Lewis who allegedly planned to rob and set fire to him. A pistol and $422 were found with him and Lewis was arrested after confessing keroseneing the bed though denying intent to kill.
The Corry Credit Exchange sponsors a free program of talking pictures at the Hex theatre on Monday at 2 30 o clock for the general public.

Colonel Lindbergh and wife Set forth on a 7000 mile vacation flight from Ottawa to Tokio via Moose Factory. They depart at 10 50 on a calm day, Lindbergh tinkering with the engine before lifting into a slight headwind. Ernest Longshore, night watchman at Kurtz Case Goods on Pennsylvania Avenue, is in Corry hospital with severe burns from an accident at the plant Friday night. Escaping steam struck his back while caring for the poll or lamp. plant closed this afternoon, and details remain scarce. Longshore, of 129 Gould Street, is resting and recovering.
Detroit August 4 report says the Goodyear blimp was buffeted by wind and rain while floating on Lake Erie near Monroe awaiting clearer weather before continuing to Detroit. The craft, piloted by a crew, faced rough conditions as a storm brewed offshore.
Washington reports the Widetrabam commission condemns police systems controlled by politicians. The 1400 page study cites corruption, rapid chief changes, weak training and low wages. It urges civil service protections, higher standards, and better funding to restore public confidence and effective policing.
Three automobiles were involved in a wreck about 1 o clock this afternoon near the part avenue. The crash caused a lengthy area of traffic but no injuries were reported. Local residents described the scene and reported the collision to authorities.
