Apollo 16 Trio Heads To Hawaii After Moon Landing
Apollo 16 crew John Young Charles Duke and Thomas Mattingly returned aboard USS Ticonderoga after a 11 day mission ending with a splashdown in the South Pacific 1500 miles south of Hawaii. They will transfer to Hickam Air Force Base then fly to the Manned Spacecraft Center where samples from Descartes Mountains await analysis. President Nixon congratulated them and promoted Duke and Mattingly while Young received another Navy promotion. The crew said the mission expanded knowledge and pushed back the frontier of the unknown as scientists study rocks believed to hold clues on the moon volcanic activity billions of years ago.

Elderly Get More Time To Seek Tax Cut
In Harrisburg, the Revenue Department extended the deadline for property tax relief applications by 30 days to May 29. The program covers seniors over 65, widows over 50, and disabled homeowners who paid real estate taxes in 1971, with many likely qualified for partial refunds if household income was under 7,500. The department reported 224,861 claims by Thursday noon, about half of expected totals, and noted remote areas may be unaware or uncertain about eligibility.
