A blaze at a four room wooden bungalow on Bowmans Bridge Road four miles south of Cassville, Ocean County, New Jersey, killed two children and a youth. Washington County construction worker Joseph Sweier died after a 22 caliber pistol wound at Mercy Hospital Pittsburgh following a confrontation at the home of Mrs. Mary Beyerbach in Vorner. Beyerbach had fled the parlor and kept Sweier prisoner since Monday. Police arrived with a warrant charging Sweier with aggravated battery and related offenses. Walter Richard Bitzpatrick, 15, confessed to killing Florence D. Martin for a dollar. He stabbed her with a hunting knife four times, then fled toward his home on a block and a half away. He was arrested after a finger injury led to questioning by A. Bruce and authorities.

Gunfire rang out as police escorted nonunion workers from Harriet-Henderson Cotton Mills in Henderson North Carolina. Homemade gasoline bombs lit streets and threats echoed as about 1,000 of 1,200 workers walked out after a breakdown in arbitration talks. The violence, the worst in 23 weeks of unrest, targeted the South Henderson and North Henderson plants with shots reported and flames rising from the gates. Authorities, led by Luther Hodges and union director Boyd Payton, sought a swift settlement as talks had broken down last weekend and the mills reopened February 16 without a contract.
