Private Plane and Airliner Crash Kills Four in Hickory

Four victims aboard a private Cessna 310 died when it collided with a Piedmont Airlines jet near Hickory North Carolina. The airliner with 40 aboard landed safely. Names include Julius Berestina 44 Imperial Furniture Co. Grand Rapids and Earl Gordon Krombeen 41 Imperial executive vice president, David Frank 66 West Coast sales manager, and Frederick James Frieswyck company pilot.

State orders rest breaks compliance for female teachers

Pennsylvania officials urge school systems to enforce a law granting females a half hour rest during an eight hour day. The crackdown targets teachers who care for children from morning through afternoon with little personal time. Deadline for enforcement is September 1960. superintendents say arrangements can be made to fit schedules while meeting the rule.

Hospital To Be Firm In Bill Collection

Corry Memorial Hospital directors discussed firmer bill collection to cope with rising costs. They plan to study options but offered no concrete plan. Also approved sending a representative to the Erie institute on May 18 and 19. The meeting covered committee program lineups for the coming year. Hospital stats: 252 patients, 1186 days, average census 38. 23 births, 6 deaths. 26 major operations, 55 minor. City Seeks Petitions For Summer Street Paving

City urges property owners to file petitions for a summer blacktop paving program by May 16 at the city engineer’s office. State law allows paving by the city or by petition requiring 50 percent of property owners and 60 percent of street frontage to approve. A separate report notes 12 month old Kimberly Skees drowned in a bathtub in suburban McKees Rocks. mother briefly left the infant unattended.

Bomb Threat Triggers Evacuation at Fisk University

More than 4,000 students and attendees, both Black and white, evacuated Fisk University in Nashville after an anonymous bomb threat. Firemen and ambulances stood by as Rev. Martin Luther King Jr addressed the crowd from Atlanta amid ongoing civil rights demonstrations. Police traced the threat to the previous night. a search found no bomb. Coed Escapes Peak Death Lost Students Reported Missing

Unemployment in Erie County At 10 Percent In April

About 46 400 in the labor force with 2 100 unemployed yields a 10 percent jobless rate in Erie County. Unemployment compares with 10 600 in January and 19 500 a year ago. Factory hiring rose 600 from January to March while non factory jobs total 50 400, or 58 percent of employment. Over 5 900 filed for unemployment benefits at Corry and Erie offices as of April 7.

Grass Fire Destroys Two-Story Barn at Cowell's Station

A two story wooden barn on the Frank Cowles property at Cowell's Station burned to the ground this morning despite efforts by Corry and Elgin-Beavardam fire departments. About 50 firemen battled wind whipped grass as the blaze spread. Mrs Cowles reportedly started the fire by discarding refuse. W L McCray across the street used a tractor to pull out equipment before the barn was lost. The barn, owned by Catherine Cowles of Williamsport, suffered an indeterminate loss.

Clock face fragments from old high school clock sold for scrap

The remains of a clock once in the high school tower are now fragments. The clock, installed in 1938 as a gift from Mrs. Martha Smith in memory of Jason Smith, was dismantled when the building closed. Attempts at a salvaged sale did not materialize as the clock came down with the structure.
