Tax revenues beat estimates as state sales tax grows
The State Budget Bureau reported sales tax receipts from September 1 1953 to February 28 1954 totaled 21 709 198 on a 1 percent levy, above the 20 200 000 estimate. The full biennium through May 31 1955 is forecast at 196 million. Taprooms increasingly collect the tax, and a new ruling taxes soft drinks used for mixed drinks. Judge George Bourquin visited Crawford County age 92 and traced his roots to Tidioute and Frenchtown. A Wright Street window peeper complaint yielded no trace. A lemon and white cocker spaniel at Snyder Circle was impounded with no license. A fatal crash on Route 8 near Hydetown was ruled accidental. City cross gates on First Avenue were damaged last week and repairs continue. Perfect April weather returns with highs near 81 and a 60 degree morning. The Child Health Center and prison sentence commutations were announced.
