Youth Killed in Columbus-Lottsville Road Crash

A 11 year old driver lost control on a curve on the Columbus-Lottsville road yesterday afternoon. One passenger, David Gibbons of North East, died minutes after being thrown from the car as it rolled over. Gibbons suffered a fractured skull and other injuries. Driver James Beach was in fair condition with concussion and injuries. Donald Gibbons sustained minor injuries. Coroners and sheriffs opened an investigation. the case may be sent to the Warren County district attorney for possible manslaughter charges.

Herter Seen For Speedy Confirmation

Washington AP reports a handful of verbal protests to the Foreign Relations Committee about Christian Herter but no formal objections to his Senate confirmation as secretary of state. A physical exam cleared him, despite arthritis limiting his mobility, and supporters urge swift approval so he can attend Western ministers talks in Paris.

Snow Flurries Threaten City Weather Update

Snow flurries spread across the eastern half of the region with Corry receiving light flurries. The weatherman warned of mild temperature swings with rain from Saturday night through morning and highs near 75 earlier, followed by 63 and 37 later. A frontal line over the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi valley is expected to bring more rain and showers in the next 12 hours.

Driver Says Blowout Caused Route 6 Crash

A 46 year old Andrew Klingensmith said a blowout on Route 6 west of Corry caused his vehicle to spin across the highway strike guard posts and roll down an embankment. He escaped with only minor injuries. Police estimate damage at 215 dollars. In Cumberland Maine a patrolman died of a heart attack while trying to aid a motorist. Patrolman Robert Tarbox aged 54 died en route to hospital after administering oxygen to Charles H Mergendahl 71 Bowdain College instructor who had collapsed in his car.

Herter Named Secretary of State Man to Watch

Washington reports tall soft spoken Christian Archibald Herter as Eisenhower's pick for secretary of state. A former undersecretary, he will attend major sessions on the German problem at Paris on April 27 and Geneva starting May 11, with a tested record in diplomacy and personal ties.

Speeding Train Kills Meadville Woman

A fatal train crash near Reborl's Crossing killed 47 year old Mrs Yoder of Meadville as a three passenger car occupants escaped before the locomotive struck the stalled vehicle. The crash damaged the diesel engine unit about 1500 and tore the car apart, with the car later recovered from the marsh. E. W. Davidson was the Meadville engineer, BW Jones the fireman, and Harry Beck the conductor.

Bread Prices Raise At Local Grocers Beginning Today

Bread costs increased across local outlets with regular white loaf up to 25 cents in some areas from 22. King white rose from 27 to 29 cents while whole wheat moved from 24 to 25 and raisin bread from 40 to 36 cents. Charles Andrus, 13, of Fir Haven, Rutland, died at Rutland Hospital from third degree burns after being led to a stake by playmates on Saturday. Dry grass around him was set afire, the flames trapped at his waist before nearby residents extinguished them.

Chorus Festival Great Success Officials Say

Corry hosts the Northwest District PMEA chorus festival with about 220 voices. School officials called the event excellent, praising Marlowe Johnson of Thiel College for leading a well rounded program. Convicts Riot Overpower Montana Prison Forces

At Montana State Prison a violent uprising left two inmates dead and a number of leaders captured. National Guardsmen and guards regained control after a dawn assault using bazooka and rifles. Warden Powell said disciplined actions will continue as investigators seek the revolt’s cause and planned inmate escape attempts. One ringleader, Jerry Myles, and inmate Lee Smart died amid the final assault, Smart killing Myles before taking his own life, while Deputy Warden Ted Rothe was also killed.

Seek Missing Family Of Four In 13-State Alert

State police issued a 13 state alert for four members of the Butler County family believed overdue on a trip home from Beloit Ohio. The family left Beloit Thursday after visiting Mrs Anna Mae Armitage daughter of Chester Perkins 54, who along with his wife Elizabeth 48, father John 79 and a son Harvey 6 are being sought.
