Pie Smackers Have Big Day on Two Campuses
Pie throwing disrupted two campuses as Tennessee Governor Ray Blanton was hit with a lemon meringue pie at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga and Bowdoin College President Roger Howell Jr. was hit by three pies in Brunswick Maine. A student, Paul Scates, admitted the prank saying it was a vaudeville gag while he was arrested and later released on bond. At Bowdoin a student group dubbed the Bowdoin Baker led a pie-throwing spree raising funds for Vietnamese orphans. Howell remained composed, signaling approval with a thumbs up as the crowd watched.

Dairymen Quit as Costs Rise and Milk Prices Fall
Harrisburg reports two Cumberland County farmers Richard Deardorff and John Hosler quit dairy farming after decades of work. Rising costs for fertilizer, feed, and equipment plus lower milk prices left Hosler with a 45 cent per 100 pounds shortfall this year. Hosler auctioned his Holstein herd and equipment. Deardorff sold cattle at loss and shut down his operation. Both cite aging, labor strain, and diminishing returns as factors.
