Democrats back a billion dollar emergency unemployment relief plan to extend 18 weeks of benefits for most idled workers. Funded by the U S Treasury, the measure would cover both insured and many noncovered workers, with 16 weeks added, and aims for House action next week.

Yesterday a city pumper failed to start during a fire alarm at West Washington Street. The quick blaze was minor and extinguished. the pumper was started later, taken to Erie for an electrical system check. This incident marks a second such failure in recent months, puzzling firemen who noted it worked on Monday.
