Loans Cause New Alignment Over Europe
Geneva April 17 The League of Nations sponsorship of loans totaling 80.4 billion to European nations triggers anxiety over new political and economic alignments. Britain and the United States face effects. Britain bought about 60 percent of loans, the U.S. roughly 20 percent. About half the loans are in some default, with Austria saved from collapse by a timely new loan. Bulgaria, Greece and Hungary owe interest and sinking fund payments. League guidance accompanies all loans, sparking debate on reform and potential outcomes.
