Local Option Bill Reported Out Today

Representative Vickerman from Allegheny of the Howes Law and Order Committee reported out a favorable recommendation on the Williams Local Option bill. The measure will be on the calendar for a hearing with a vote tomorrow morning and an effort will be made to have it calendared.

Sinking steamer Monarch runs aground near Selby Island

The excursion steamer Monarch took on water and ran ashore in a foggy morning off Selby Island. All sixty five passengers and crew, many from Sacramento and San Francisco, were rescued before the vessel sank in shallow water. Crew and passengers improvised life preservers and gangplanks before the ship finally disappeared.

Local R A and Township Deal Approved

The Public Service Commission granted a certification of approval for a contract between Concord township, the county, and the Pennsylvania Railroad, effective for a change of station and grade crossings in Concord. The township will receive $18,000 from the railroad, while Mrs. Thomas Reedy is to get $1,000 and Thomas B. McGray up to $500 in damages. Residents and officials welcome the end of a prolonged dispute over relocation and station changes.

Mexican Threat Pushes U.S. Troops to Brownsville

A border clash near Brownsville Texas prompted General Funston to rush reinforcements from Fort Sam Houston after the Mexican forces opened heavy fire along the Rio Grande. The battle raged at Matamoros four miles above Brownsville with field guns firing and bullets striking near the American side, though no U.S. casualties were reported.
