Easter Buying Boon To Retail Business
New York April 11 after buying lifted retail sales near a six year peak this week the Dun and Bradstreet weekly trade review said but the shopping tempo was slowed by adverse weather conditions in some sections. The week’s business was estimated at 12 to 18 percent over a year ago with wholesale markets occupied by last minute fill in requires and urgent replacements for food damaged stores. Master buying quickened its pace as shoppers taxed retailers on some days though weather kept volume below expectations. Shoes millinery dress accessories children’s apparel women’s wear and men’s clothing led demand while toys gifts candy jewelry and sporting goods also contributed. Furniture house furnishings and electrical appliances moved more slowly though groceries staples dry goods and hardware expanded.
