Meat prices blamed on Congress say Butz on TV
Agriculture Secretary Earl L Butz blamed Congress for general inflation and high meat prices in a Meet the Press interview with two cabinet colleagues He urged housewives to boycott spendthrift lawmakers predicting meat prices will ease when supplies rise by late summer or early fall Butz opposed broad food price controls and warned against rationing He said the boycott may not last long and blamed the public for a shift away from meat The discussion also covered labor layoffs from lower meat sales and criticism of Congress over federal spending priorities and a looming spending cap S: The piece notes Butz linking meat prices to Congress and the Nixon administration facing disputes over spending and price policy, with cabinet members weighing price ceilings and the efficacy of boycotts.
