Planes Aid Mekong Convoy To Phnom Penh Amid Heat of War
American warplanes pounded Communist gunners along the Mekong to push a convoy into Phnom Penh after 20 days. Three tankers and two cargo ships reached the city while two ships were lost and 11 captains abandoned the voyage. The Lucky Star reported being hit as air support arrived within 1000 feet. Despite attacks, more tankers were expected and gasoline shortages eased with long lines at stations. American air shipments to Phnom Penh doubled since February, with C130 planes delivering weapons and ammo from Thailand at about 20 loads per week.
