Hollywood reports the 1.5 million movie Ben Hur swept the 1959 Academy Awards, winning best picture and best director while Charlton Heston claimed best actor. Hugh Griffith earned best supporting actor as Simone Signoret won best actress for Room at the Top. The screenplay went to Room at the Top, which also claimed the top acting prize.
The Corry Cancer Society appeal topped $1,280 in donations at a noon meeting in the Hotel Corry. Roy Reed, chairman, urged community support as the drive seeks $2,500 for education and research. Tomorrow night a forum at Corry Area High School will feature physicians from Corry and Erie. The event will be broadcast on WOTR with safety messages about cancer.
Norman Clymer Walter Spinks, 40, of Wall Corners, is listed in critical condition at Meyer Memorial Hospital Buffalo after injuries from a tractor mishap Friday afternoon. He was pinned between the steering wheel and a low barn rafter when the tractor reversed, and was found by his wife after about an hour.

Rob ert Ott, doctor, was appointed to the City Planning Commission to fill the unexpired term of Clarence Wallace who resigned due to ill health. Mayor J Pred Kinley submitted Ott’s name for council approval from a list of about 25, with three candidates considered and two unavailable. The five members include E. Anderson, Dr John Mohy, Louis Miller, Harold Gilbert, and Ott.
