Farmers Balk at High Price of Seed Potatoes

Erie April 5 farmers revolt against ceiling prices on seed potatoes. Paul Crossman of the Erie County Extension Bureau says shortages likely next year. About 20 growers at a session reported many will not plant or will cut back. Seed potato cost rose from 90 cents to 83 cents per bushel and costs to plant a barrel rose sharply. Concerns include labor and spraying. A county produced about 1,000,000 bushels last year despite a recent shortage. Government demand for a 10 to 16 percent increase could not be met, Crossman fears, signaling another potato shortage.
