La Salle II canoeists reach New Orleans in homage voyage
Twenty two shirtless, shaggy haired canoeists arrive in New Orleans after an eight month recrea tion of LaSalle’s Mississippi exploration. Fifteen Elgin high school students and seven adult chaperones stage a 17th century ceremony on the riverbank, raise a cross, fire muskets and claim land in Louis XIV’s name. The voyage began last August in Montreal and ends Saturday at the Mississippi mouth, 295 years from LaSalle’s original feat.
