State To Offer New Freedom School Course

HARMISBURG AP Pennsyl vana State pupils will start comparing Democratic and Communist beliefs under a new mandatory course next fall. Dr Joseph P Gavenonis former state commander of the American Legion said an outline will go to county superintendents and high school principals next month. The course is being finalized by superintendent Charles H Boehm Gavenonis. It will compare freedoms under Democracy and Communism as part of Problems of Democracy now taught to seniors. The department can mandate two weeks of instruction under a 1952 school code revision. Boehm has told districts the course should be included. Gavenonis says there is a great need given Korea brain washing and fears about American youths understanding the American way of life to argue against Communism.
