Government workers face 18 percent pay rise debate
The House will weigh a bill to raise salaries by 18 percent for 900,000 white collar federal workers and 18 percent for 400,000 postal workers. The plan shifts from a Senate proposal for an 11 percent average increase. President Truman had urged broader 20 percent hikes, citing civilian federal staffing declines since the war and ongoing reductions through next June. Civil demobilization slows as peacetime agencies hire to fill war vacancies and reinstatements rise, complicating efforts to trim the federal workforce.
