Appeal to Employers to List Open Jobs in District
Bernard A. Williams of the United States Employment Service announced a local job development campaign urging City employers to list openings with USES. The effort aligns with state and federal drives to match about 6.2 million returning veterans and other job seekers with suitable positions, noting 31 veterans placed locally so far this year and 573 applicants still seeking work. Williams said veterans often bring valuable pre service experience, urging employers to list all jobs to improve matches and gain broader access to qualified workers.

Portable tar melting tank explodes near Kane
An explosion shattered a portable tar melting tank on Ship Road causing a 60 foot smoke column and brush fire toward Hemlock Avenue and Route 219. Highway crewman Clifford Bowley narrowly escaped injury as the tank vented hot tar in the opposite direction. Fire units stopped the blaze and traffic on Route 219 was held up by smoke and glare from burning tires. Equipment was ruined but may be salvaged due to heat resistance.
