Pittsburgh April 3 More than eight thousand miners out of one hundred thousand employed in the Pennsylvania soft coal fields are idle today despite a 30 day extension of the collective bargaining contract between United Mine Workers and operators. Reports to the Burea of Mines Administration show five mines employing 16 978 down in western Pennsylvania with a few stations 29 000 men absent from working pits. The UMW reports in Altoona indicate eleven central Pennsylvania mines employing 1850 men idled, keeping many others away. The old contract expired last Saturday night but was extended at the direction of the War Labor Board and negotiations continue in Washington between John L. Lewis and operators. Among mines closed are the Pittsburgh Coal Company's properties employing the 1916 men, and several captive operations owned by the U.S. Steel Corporation and the Innes a Laughlin Steel Corporation.
Philadelphia April B S convicts escaped from Bastet prison under cover of a wall breach. Warden Herbert Smith described the break as a long planned escape with guards fired upon and several inmates wounded as they fled into the city streets. Names and ages of many escapees appear in police reports.
Scheppner emerges as a Republican candidate for city council with petitions circulating. Waller Sweet, the current finance supervisor, is the rival hopeful, while Democratic prospects for mayor appear weak. Petitions for school director seats are filed by Ed ward W. Felut, L. S. Graham, E. G. Bates, and Charles Monroe, with further entries anticipated.
John Larkin Jr a Buffalo industrialist died after nine years of illness at 87. He founded the Larkin Company and led it as president and general manager for ten years. The firm, liquidated in 1942, made soap and household goods and operated stores and a large department mall.
A well known Worth East dentist Dr. Sovags has been missing since Friday March 3rd. Neighbors and family appeal for any trace as he has lived in North Bast four years and was hospitalized recently. Police and friends urge calm while authorities probe his disappearance.
Mr and Mrs Gus Castrantas of West Pleasant Street received a War Department telegram notifying their son Prevou Castrantas is missing in action in Germany as of March 15. He had served over two and a half years, including a year overseas, with General Patton's Third Army. There is a chance he may be a prisoner of war, and family and friends await further action.
London April 3 reports a U S Eighth Air Force attack on Wilhelmshaven naval dockyards. The high cruiser Koln and several other vessels were set afire. a 370-foot motor ship was sunk and two submarines also burned. The communique confirms naval targets and damage.
American forces press toward Weser and the Rhine as British and Canadian units reach near the Zuider Zee and the North Sea. Patton’s 3rd Army nears the Czech frontier while U.S. forces push toward Berlin and Kassel.

Elizabeth Martelli of Niagara Falls holds the property for owner Al Marty. The lower floor will be remodeled and interior work expanded. Firestone representatives plan a mid month opening between the 16th and 20th.
