Civil rights demonstrators in Camden Alabama aim for a courthouse march despite Mayor Reg Albritton’s efforts to block access. Three marches were stopped using smoke devices, with no injuries reported as the town’s small police force seeks nonviolent security. In Birmingham, Gov George Wallace announced a $5,000 reward for those behind a dynamite blast in a Negro neighborhood, with pledges reaching $50,000. Authorities investigated subsequent time bombs at the homes of Mayor Boutwell and a city council member amid an atmosphere of racial tension.

Four U S Army men were killed and six wounded in heavy fighting in a Viet Cong stronghold twenty miles west of Saigon. Helicopter crews were among the dead and wounded as two U S Army helicopters were shot down. Albany police say Parrie Reeves a 17 year old Guilderland student and son a State University of Albany guidance professor admitted rigging a wire and spark plug bomb in the gas tank of teacher John T Ryan 3 4 at Guilderland Central High School to tow up the car. The device was discovered March 1. Reeves told investigators he did not want to hurt anyone just blow up the car and he was released to a probation officer after a brief hearing.
President Johnson's aides voiced cautious optimism over Vietnam, with Ambassador Taylor briefing Congress before returning to Saigon. Johnson rejected any broad new strategy or use of poison gas, saying peace talks are unlikely now and no productive conference is anticipated. The Post Office plans a major overhaul of Star Routes potentially eliminating three of four Corry routes. After July 1 mail from Corry to north or south would travel indirect paths via Erie and Oil City or Jamestown, greatly increasing distances from 28 miles direct to about 119 miles and from six miles to near 90 miles for other connections. The plan, still sketchy, affects Erie to Grand Valley, Corry to Panama, and two others.
A Perry County businessman Byron L Halter 47 fled after he was charged with the murder of his wife Betty Jane 44 daughter Holly Lynn 17 and mother in law Elizabeth Catherine Swank 68 in Duncannon Pennsylvania state police issued a nationwide alarm. Police found the bodies at a duplex and a letter with a chilling promise of salvation was shared with local outlets but its author remains at large.
