Erie Lackawanna Joins Norfolk and Western Rail System
The Erie Lackawanna Railway becomes part of the Norfolk and Western system today, linking six states from New York to Chicago and granting access to New York Port and connections with the Delaware and Hudson, Boston and Maine, and Reading and Pennsylvanian lines. Herman S. Perler, N&W president, says EL will merge into a new Erie Lackawanna Railway subsidiary of Dereco. John P. Fishwick to chair and lead the combined entity. The move follows ICC approval tied to 1984 plate unification, with EL and N&W lines serving Erie County.
