Rotarians Hear Rev Lax Describe Backwoods Experience

Rev Lax, assistant pastor at Christ Episcopal Church, spoke to Rotarians at the Hotel del Coronado about 19 years of church work among Indians in isolated parts of British Columbia. Gala Dance Planned by Coronado Youth Center Tonight

Coronado youths under 21 will attend a dance tomorrow night at the Youth Center Building on Sixth Street and H Avenue. Sponsored by Coronado service and fraternal groups, the event runs from 8 p.m. to midnight with Ray Ames leading a six piece college orchestra. Balloons refreshments and games will be featured and there are no charges or pass-out restrictions.

San Diego State College starts fall registration with about 1400 new students guiding the process as over 4000 total students register for the fall term. Summer enrollment peaked at 3625 across two sessions, while the current record stands at 4374 last fall.

Bond election on Silver Strand purchase planned in Coronado

A special election will be held next Tuesday September 14 to decide a 175000 bond for buying 281 acres of the Silver Strand property between the bay and rail tracks five miles south of Coronado. A two thirds voter majority is required for approval. If approved, part would be used for dumping and utilities while the rest would become a recreation area and future homesites. The ranch was formerly owned by the Spreckels Company.

Lions Club Discusses Bad Check Artists Tuesday

Detective Sergeant Gene Muhlheisen of the San Diego Police Department spoke to Lions Club members at the Colony restaurant on Tuesday. He warned that bad checks are rising in southern California and offered precautions for merchants, including using driver licenses for ID and fingerprinting checks from trusted customers, while advising against accepting postdated checks. He noted a high incidence of repeat offenders among bad check passers. Guests included Burt Kramer, A L Dunstede, and J L Brazelle. George Crawford presided.

Safety Council Holds Meeting At Fire Station

Coronado Safety Council met last night at the Fire Station hall with Rear Adm. W. L. USN (Ret.) presiding. Discussion covered painting speed limits on pavements, Labor Day advertisements, safety movie showings at schools and clubs, and an audit of the treasurer’s report.
