Coordinating Council to Host Election Information Meeting

The Coronado Coordinating Council will hold a public meeting at the High School Auditorium on Wednesday March 31 at 7 30 p m. Max Forney announced voters will hear from candidates and discuss four bond issues totaling 490 000 and a city retirement plan. Ballot items include Civic Building 220 000 Library improvements 45 000 Fire Department projects 25 000 and Hog Farm properties purchase 200 000.

Coronado Jets Make Historic Carrier Landing Ledger

Two Coronado naval pilots, Squadron Leader Commander E P Aurand and Lt Commander R M Elder, became the first to land jet propelled aircraft on a carrier deck aboard the Boxer. They shattered prior notions of jet practicality for naval use and set Seattle to San Francisco and Seattle to Los Angeles speed records in separate runs.

Coronado seeks redevelopment bill for Erie Homes project

The joint screening committee in Sacramento ruled the redevelopment bill not urgent. Coronado officials led by Mayor Archibald Abel and attorney Doris Sullivan sought power to redevelop the Glorietta Bay navy housing site into privately owned residences and recreation facilities. Assemblyman Ralph Dills urged urgency, stressing housing is a critical California issue, but the motion failed.

Bicycle Parade Highlights Kiwanis Safety Drive

Over 300 cyclists joined the Kiwanis Bicycle Safety Week Parade along Orange Avenue. Police Officer Millar spoke to students on street rules and safety. Contest winners for slogans and posters were announced with final judging by Kiwanis committee members. Howard Young won first in plank riding earning a Holland’s Bicycle Shop merchandise order. second prize went to Lawrence Richards and Mickey Compton for theatre tickets.

Expert Craft Teacher To Hold Classes Here For Two Months

Mary Sunday will teach arts and crafts for adults and leaders for two months in April and May. Classes run Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Recreation Center 706 Sixth Street with morning, afternoon, or all day options. First class is April 7. Subjects include leather, stenciling, braiding, knotting, block printing, metal tooling, etching, glass etching, paper, and shell crafts.
