Merry Macs to Perform Twice at Hotel del Coronado

The Merry Macs quartet will sing in Circus Room at Hotel del Coronado Friday and Saturday July 1 and 2. The group, featuring Judd Ted Marjorie McMichael and Clive Brard, is renowned for blend singing and has appeared on Fred Allen Kate Smith Jolson and other radio programs.

Coronado's Annual Drama Tourney Draws Local Groups

Coronado players compete in the fourth annual drama tournament sponsored by the League of Little Theatres of San Diego County at the Old Globe Theatre Balboa Park July 8 and 9. The one act play A Surfing Afternoon directed by Betty Whitmore stars Louise Dobler Donna Laura and Bob Beivitch Jaunito. Six groups vie for awards including the Sanderson Cup and four San Diego Journal prizes. A $500 Geller Theatre scholarship honors promising young actors and actresses with top actor and director awards. Judges include William Burson Ralph Froude and Arthur Schnitzler.

New Telephone Directories to Be Distributed

Nearly 106 000 copies of the July 1949 telephone directories are being delivered in the San Diego exchange. Subscriptions go to the San Diego extended area and county exchanges. M. B. Hebner of Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company notes an 18 000 copy increase from last September.

Kiwanis Club Plans Probation Talk and Ladies Night

San Diego Kiwanis members will hear probation officers from the county department at the weekly luncheon at the Colony. The club also sets July 7 for Ladies Night at the Methodist Church hall with an entertainment program. Members will run two benefit booths at the Scout Carnival grounds next Saturday.

Coronado Yacht Club Regatta Crowns Visitors in Multiple Classes

The Coronado Yacht Club annual small boat regatta drew the most entries from Flatties and Lightnings, with visitors taking all first places. Winners included Austin Peeples and Georgia Weisgerber in Flatties, John Potts and Ed Turner in Lightnings, and Tom Jenkins in the Starlets. P‑14s saw Clay Campbell win with Wasp, and a July 3 handicap race is planned plus a Crown Cove Party next weekend.

Pasadena umpire wins 34th Hotel del Coronado Tennis Title

Big Hugh Stewart of Pasadena City College defended his men’s singles title by defeating Jack Kerr of Los Angeles in the finals. Beverly Baker of Santa Monica captured the women’s singles crown by defeating Mrs. Gracy Kehcheher of Santa Monica in straight sets.

State disability insurance to begin July 25

James G. Bryant, director of the State Department of Employment, announced that disabled veterans and others who are currently drawing veterans’ readjustment allowances may file for state disability insurance benefits after July 25. Benefits range from $10.25 a week for off the job illness or injury.
